Solo travel is on the rise, recent reports have suggested. But what drives older Britons to take the plunge. Online booking platform Opodo commissioned research to find the reasons why they – and younger age groups – go it alone and what they think they derive from the experience. One in ten of those aged 55-64 say they “want to know themselves better”, though by the time they reach 65 they would seem to have the answers, with the figure dropping to 6%. When asked if the motive was meeting new people, 15% of Gen X and 13% of Boomers said they would travel solo for that reason. As for the benefits, 39% per cent of Boomers cited feelings of self sufficency, while 15% improved their “mental clarity”. Did that clarity result in greater openness to other cultures and or new ways of thinking. Disappointingly, perhaps, only 15% felt it did.
