Multivitamin supplements can slow memory decline in older adults, according to research by scientists at Columbia University in the US. The three year study involved over 3500 over 60s. At the end of each year they performed tests designed to assess the memory function of the hippocampus, part of the brain affected by normal ageing. Compared with those given a placebo, those taking the vitamins showed improvements equivalent to about three years of age related memory decline. The impact was even more pronounced among participants with cardiovascular disease.
