A 60 years old engineer says he began to run into ageism as long ago as his forties. Jokes have been made about his age during the recruitment process and he has been “told outright that a younger person “would be a better fit with a team’s dynamic”. Bill Howell, who lives in Berkshire and has over 30 years experience in engineering, was made redundant during the pandemic. Since then he and his wife have been in and out of short term jobs. Though he is still six years off the official retirement age, he laments that such rejections have left him unsure he will ever find full time employment again.
