A solo backpacking adventure in the Himalayas was the start of a new perspective on life for the then 65 years old Ann Halloran. While climbing Gokyo Ri (54000 metres) she broke her stick – an essential aid as she suffers from osteoporosis. But the former HR executive shrugged off the setback. Armed with a replacement she made it to the summit. “It gave me confidence that at my age I could go up to that height”, she says. Now, “whenever I get scared, I think of myself on top of that mountain, looking out over Lake Gokyo – and beyond that Everest. I say, if you can do that, you can do anything.” You must keep stretching your comfort zone she believes. “As you get older, that’s even more important because you get fearful, and I want to fight against that”.
