Growth in solo travel is being driven by the over-50s market – and notably by women who have reached retirement age, according to escorted tours specialist Newmarket Holidays. Four in every five customers booking the operator’s ‘Exclusively Solo’ group tours are women – and nearly half of them (46%) are aged between 65 and 74. Italy has taken top spot for short haul solos destinations, while interest further afield is concentrated on India’s Golden Triangle – connecting Delhi, Agra and Jaipur – and Kenyan safaris. Newmarket launched its first dedicated solo travel range in May last year.
