Marketing to older adults via the telephone threatens to become more difficult as scams targeting them soar, a new study suggests. Researchers from the University of Portsmouth found that one in five participants in two surveys reported experiencing at least one attempted fraud per week. Interviews with respondents make it clear this activity is a widespread undermining of trust in phone communications. The problem is particularly acute among over 75s. But the researchers note the diversification of voice channels, through Skype for example, and the mass use of video calls, which rocketed during the pandemic, indicating a likelihood that future waves of silvers will be dogged by the same concerns.
