Two thirds of employees in “collar” jobs have been overlooked for promotion in the past year, according to new research. And one third say they are not even aware of what they need to do to secure one. Meanwhile almost a fifth (17%) of over 50s feel their manager doesn’t take the time to understand their personal challenges – the highest percentage of all the age groups surveyed, with 21% citing lack of training as an impediment for their advancement. The survey findings follow concern that an exodus of over 50s who left the workforce during the Covid pandemic is fuelling wage inflation. John Lewis boss Dame Sharon White has said the Government must think “really hard” about how to get more older people back into work.
