Women over 50 are putting quality of life ahead of living longer, according to a fascinating new study. But men are more likely to prioritise the latter. Research the University of East Anglia and University College suggests older women are more inclined than men to take the “you could be dead tomorrow” view of spending savings, and more likely to challenge the advice of doctors. Men on the other hand, said Prof Nicholas Steel, from UEA’s Norwich Medical School, “were more likely to hand decision making power to medical professionals and were less likely to put quality of life ahead of simply living longer.” Researchers stressed, however, that within these broad findings, they found a vast array of different views among the more than 6,000 over 50s they questioned.
