New light has been thrown on the nightmare of shopping for travel insurance that seems calculated to disturb silver sleep patterns – particularly those with pre existing health conditions. Research by consumer watchdog Which? suggests there is no guarantee of getting a better deal from companies that specialise in covering customers declaring such issues. It notes that most insurers outsource medical screening to one of two companies, but found those companies adopted different approaches, with one posing more detailed questions than the other. In a survey of 9000 members it found that of the three quarters (74%) declaring pre-existing conditions, 82% felt this had affected the cost of their premium – with a quarter (25%) feeling that it had a major impact.
