They are mostly self employed or part time but the proportion of over-65s in the UK labour market has doubled since the start of the century, according to a new analysis by the Centre for Ageing better. There are now more than 1.43m of them (11.5%), compared with 457,000 (5.2%) in 2000. However, 566,000 of the increase reflects growth in number of UK over-65s overall during those 23 years.
