A little respite from the recent gale of advice against consuming alcohol. Red wine, according to a new study by US and Irish researchers, could help protect people over 60 against physical and mental deterioration. Though this has been highlighted in at least one news report, the findings come with inevitable caveats. Any benefits come from consuming a range of foods and drinks containing natural substances called flavonoids. Professor Aedin Cassidy of the School of Biological Sciences at Queen’s University Belfast explained that could mean a glass of red a day as part of a diet high in plant rich food. Higher intakes of tea, red wine, apples, blueberries, and oranges were all good. Then, of course, there is the question of how many centilitres qualify as a glass – but quality over quantity can’t be a bad thing.
