British and Chinese representatives have shared insights into ways to tackling the problems of their ageing populations – and how to reap the dividends. Last week they discussed potential collaboration at a Beijing seminar convened by the UK’s Department of Business and Trade. The meeting, which followed a similar event in London, came aainst the backround of stunning statistics on expected growth in China’s over 50s market. In 2024 it was worth approximately £2.67 trillion, a figure forecast to rise to £3.49 trillion in 2035 and £4.75 trillion in 2050. Fifty pluses now account for £36 per cent of the country’s population, rising to 45 per cent in the next nine years. Where ageing is sometimes seen as a drag on growth, the Beijing government is increasingly treating it as an economic opportunity, viewin its older demographis as a key economic driver – and has aleady set out a health policy to make that possible.
