The proliferation of car parking apps is causing agitation among older drivers. A clutch of individual complaints reported by the BBC has thrown a spotlight on widespread concern. One example came from Roland Nice, who said he was “clobbered” with a fine after spending eight minutes trying to work out how to pay. Overwhelmed by the digital payment options on offer, he wrongly believed he could not pay with cash and left to park elsewhere, despite cash payments being accepted. He then received a £60 fine from the car park operator, which told the BBC motorists were afforded a five minute grace period to decide whether to park or not. A spokesperson for the British Parkng Association, which represents operators, said nobody should feel excluded or confused when trying to pay. “Drivers should be able to quickly understand how to pay, what payment methods are available and how to avoid making an honest mistake.” She pointed to the National Parking Plaform app, set up to provide greater simplicity through a one stop payment solution embracing a range of major operators.
