Nearly half of people over 70 have been subjected to “agesplaining”, according to a survey reported by the Times*, meaning the people addressing them altered the way they spoke. They complained that this tendency – the ord derives from “mansplaining”, or speaking patronisingly to woman – made them feel older than hey were. Eleven per cent said they had been regularly spoken to as if they were children. Meanwhile 16% of people between 18 and 69 admitted they would speak more slowly to an older person and almost a quarter (23%) would speak more loudly.
