Marketing exercise equipment to the over-60s is far from a waste of resources, if the advice of a growing number of experts continues to gain traction. And that should mean now just running, walking or cycling gear but weights and resistance bands. Among those to stressing the benefits is Dr Luis Serratosa, head of the sports medicine department at Madrid’s Olympia Quironsalud, who says exercising is good at any age, not only as a way to prevent illness, but in some cases as a treatment. “It is a very powerful therapeutic tool that has very beneficial effects, as long as it is done properly.” He says most people prefer heart lung exercise such as walking or biking but they should work on strength training on “at least two or three days a week”, to combat the loss of muscle mass with age.
