Spending on holidays by Britons over 50 has soared by 27% this year, according to a new report. That came on top of a 21% rise last year. To some extent the increases are likely to have reflected a bounce back after the pandemic, which closed down the travel industry for a while and left many still wary of taking off abroad for some time after the threat receded. But they look impressive nonetheless. The research comes from SunLife, in its third annual “Life Well Spent” report. It found that the happiest over-50s spend an average of £2943 on foreign trips – up £134 on last year. Silver travellers expect their “dream holiday” would cost them and average of £7101, down slightly on last year’s finding. But will they take the plunge? Nearly a third (31%) said they plan to take a bucket list trip “one day”, 25% were “hopeful but not confident that would be able to afford it – and a sad one in three didn’t think they would ever have funds enough to spare.
