Silver travellers are ignoring economic gloom when it comes to booking holidays, according to Saga. The over 50s specialist says the overwhelming majority (85%) of its customers are planning to spend the same amount or more in 2025 than they did last year. And More than half (55%) of those who responded to a survey already had already booked at least one holiday booked for this year. Nearly a third (32%) were expecting to travel four or more times, with 24% taking at least three holidays. The research, reported in trade publication Travel Weekly, indicated “a certain financial resilience and savviness” among older travellers, says the operator. Only one in ten said they had changed their plans for financial reasons. Those aged 50-59 showed the strongest tendency to take more trips than in 2024 (35%), followed by 60-69 year olds (30%).Rather than forgoing their travel plans, 42% said they were hopping around more and 30% were waiting for deals or discounts or other deals.Almost two thirds of those surveyed showed interest in holidays centred on a particular hobby or theme, such as birdwatching, archaeology or astronomy. Saga Holidays product director Zoe Tasker said: “Our research this year paints an encouraging picture of the over-50s traveller. Despite wider economic uncertainties, they remain committed to their annual holidays and are looking to travel more and increase their spending on travel over the next 12 months. The rise in special interest holidays for 2025 shows how travellers are now looking to combine their passions with their travel plans. Rather than learning something new, it’s indulging in what they already love – whether it’s tracing historical footsteps, exploring culinary delights, or engaging in arts and culture – while enjoying a carefully curated holiday experience.”
