A majority of Britons fear they won’t have enough money for a comfortable retirement, according to a new survey. More than half (57%) are either “not very” or “not at all” confident their income will sufficiently high. Meanwhile nearly three quarters of retired people in the UK think the state pension is too low. But less than a quarter (22%) of all Britons questioned think extra funding should be provided to help older workers to stay in their jobs for longer rather than retiring, while 9% believe the state pension should be reduced or removed altogether for high income retired people. The research, provides insight into differing attitudes in five European countries plus the US. Respondents were also asked if they would support the introduction of a legal requirement for working age people to up the amount they pay into a private or workplace pension, or savings plan. Approximately one third (34%) in the UK said they would – a proportion nearly double that of Germans (18%) and far greater than that in France (4%) and the US (3%), while people in Spain and Italy appeared overwhelmingly against the idea.
