The number of UK men living beyond 90 has more than doubled in two decades. The estimated total rose to 210,520 last year from 970,750 in 2004, figures from the Office for National Statistics reveal. In contrast the number of women reaching the same age increased by only around one third over the same period, to 414,720. Reasons for the disparity are not clear, though women still make up the overall majority of older adults. The the proportion of men over 90 also rose sharply but only from 24% to 33.7%.
