It’s not just olive oil and fresh sardines that prolong your life, new research suggests. Adopting a Mediterranean lifestyle in other ways – easier said than done in a British winter perhaps – can also stave off the risk of death from cancer, cardiovascular disease and other health conditions. The findings were presented at an American Heart Association conference. Researchers had analysed the impact of Mediterranean lifestyle factors, including physical activity, rest, social habits and conviviality, on 110,799 middle aged and older adults living in England, Scotland abd Wales. They probed whether people got together with family and friends or ate meals with them, engaged in physical activity with others, such as walking – and how much sleep they got – either at night or through daytime naps.
