Marketing to over-50s could produce even higher dividends as a result of inheritance tax changes in Rachel Reeves’ Budget, according to a new survey. Research by Regency Living shows there has been a sharp rise in the number of home owners looking at ways of reducing the tax likely to be faced by those receiving their bequests. Around one third (35%) now plan to take “a more proactive approach” by downsizing their properties. The capital released could be passed on via existing IHT avoidance routes such as lifetime gifting. But the figures also suggest significant increases in simply splashing more of it on themselves – reasoning, for example, that every £10,000 spent on travel, fine wines or other luxury goods, for example, will be worth only £3000 to each of two heirs.
