Could British consumers in their sixties be encouraged to take up a musical instrument – or even compose a sonata or two? Shining examples of what can be done come from the United States, where the world renowned Juilliard School of Music in New York runs courses for older adults.Half of those on its “Extension program” at any given time are aged over 65.Silver participants are able to sign up for Fundamentals of Piano, for example, which, says Dean of the programme John-Morgan Bush, “can be for someone who has never placed their finger on a keyboard before”.“We want to help people pick up on a passion that they had in their younger years or else discover something for the first time. The goal is to help adults ignite their curiosity about the arts and express them in their individual way,” he says.
