A round of golf could be healthier than walking for older people, new research suggests. Despite its lower exercise intensity the longer time golf takes and the higher total energy expended appear to have greater cardiovascular benefits. The Finnish study compared participants compleing18 holes of golf with 6kms walking or Nordic walking (the latter involving use of poles to work the upper body as well as legs). The authors admit their findings had limitations: the sample size was small, and while the golfers who took part knew were experienced, no such demand was necessary when it came to the walkers. And the who participated In Nordic walking fopr the firfst time may have expended excessive energy through poor technique.
