One in five older people in the UK are stuck in their current homes because of a shortage of suitable alternatives, according to new research from the Centre for Ageing Better. Despite some 4m over 55s saying they would like to move, only 8% have done so in the past three years. And they didn’t all move because they wanted to downsize. That was the motive for only 20%. Another 20% upped sticks for a better neighbourhood or a more pleasant area. The report says it is generally assumed older people should either downsize to make way for young families or switch to specialist accommodation. But, argues the report, they are a diverse group of active consumers with different needs and aspirations when it comes to moving home. (Image by Dave Dunford via Wikimedia Commons)
