From baking to making curtains, a growing number of Britons are starting their own businesses in later life. According to one survey, 35% of new ventures in the UK are now launched by people aged 50 and older. After asking readers to decsribe their own experiences of taking on such challenges,it has reported on a fascinating variety of examples. Many told the newspaper they wanted to fulfill creative ambitions or improve their better lifestyles, often after long years in unsatisfactory or highly stressful employment. Among them a 63 year old who, dismayed by biodiversity loss, joined forces with a partner in the company that measures it using AI and audio recordings, with the aim of helping NGOs and others to reach greater understanding. Other include a 62 year old former economics teacher who became “a cycling curtain maker” and a 64 years old retired IT systems specialist who started a sourdough bakery in her home.
