Healthier older age workers may be able to combine forces with a particularly powerful labour saving technology – artificial intelligence – for a fresh double barrelled boost to economic momentum. So suggests an intriguing article published by the World economic forum. It points to research that indicates that ageng and or shrinkng populations have managed to output per worker in the past, avoiding falls in GDP, by comng up with such technology advances – citing the backwash after the second world war. Then, a shortage caused by military and other deaths “spurred a pickup in patenting ways to do more mechanically with fewer able bodies”. The same solution might be found in coupling AII wiith the fact that people are not just livng longer – but living better. It quotes a recent study showing that, between the early 1990s and the eve of the pandemic, US spending on Medicare benefits increased at less than half the rate of those for social security.
