An interesting insight into the way China views its ageing population comes from the International Leisure Centre. Back from a recent visit to Guangzhou, in the south of the country on the Pearl River and about 75 miles northwest of Hong Kong, Enily Evans, senior Communications and Engagement Manager of the centre’s UK arm, writes: “In the UK we tend to start conversations about ageing with health, care and inequality. Guangzhou starts somewhere different. Older people are described as “silver talent”. Retirement is not an end point but the beginning of a “second life” of contribution, creativity and participation. Retired professionals mentoring younger entrepreneurs. Older residents designing their own courses and passing on skills. A choir with more than 1,000 members performing internationally.” (Image is of Guangzhou’s Canton Tower))
