Are today’s silvers unwittingly falling victim to self imposed ageism? That’s the intriguing question raised in a new article that quotes fom a US survey that found people who were positive about growing older lived and average of 7.5 years longer than those who dwelled on the negatives. Those negatives are revealed by verbal habits – such as telling others that at your age “you can’t expect to keep up.” It’s not entirely our fault, however. We spent our working lives and more “watching advertising tell them that youth was the thing worth having” and building careers in environments where the energy and ambition of younger colleagues were continually “valorized”. And we watched the technology world explicitly celebrate young people with bright ideas “as though experience was a liability”.
