Higher National Insurance costs for employers announced in Rachel Reeves’ Budget could make it more difficult for older people to get jobs, fears Rest Less, the digital community for over 50s. Chief executive Stuart Lewis said: “Coupled with the costs of adapting to previously announced changes to employment legislation and a 6.7% uplift in the minimum wage, we wouldn’t be surprised to see hiring freezes, or even layoffs in those sectors particularly exposed to rising cost pressures, such as hospitality and retail. History has shown us that older workers are often the most impacted during a weak employment market, tending to be the first out the door in difficult economic conditions and the last back in during the recovery.”
