The Government must provide more support for people nearing or passing retirement age who would like to find jobs, says the Centre for Ageing Better in a new report. It says more needs to be done if the UK is to hit its target of 80% overal employment- a jump of 5% from its current level. Assisting older people to work could make an important contribution but curently employment rates fall sharply among those aged 55-plus.
Other countries – namely the Netherlands, Switzerland and Iceland – have already hit the 80% figure. They have a much higher percentage of people aged 55 to 64 in employment than the UK” – respectively 75% for the first two cited and 81% in Iceland. Health problems are a key reason why older people fall out of work, it notes. Yet “nearly half a million people aged 50 to 65 who have left work due to health reasons would return if the right support were in place.
