The role of Rosalind in As You Like It will be played by 72 years old Geraldine James on stage in Stratford-upon-Avon this summer. She will be joined by other veteran actors in what the Royal Shakespeare Company describes as as “a playful and provocative” production. The stage will become a rehearsal room, in which the cast gather to share out roles between them. It’s not the first age blind interpretation of the Bard’s works. For example, Ian McKellen played Hamlet at 82 in Windsor in 2021, while Vanessa Redgrave and James Earl Jones took on the roles of Beatrice and Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing ten years ago – at 76 and 82 respectively. .
