Denmark’s plan to raise its retirement age to 70 raises the question whether a sufficient number of people will be up to working that long. The author of a new online article considers the available statistics. Clare Wilson points out that in the UK, while expected average lifespan has increased, “healthspan” has changed only slightly. A 2021 House of Lords report noted that between and 2016, for example, life expectancy for men rose by 0.8 years. But over the same period their expectation of continuing in good health improved by only 0.4 per cent. And for women, healthspan fell by 0.2 years over the same period, while lifespan rose by 0.6 years.
