“Disturbing evidence” that ageism in the US is getting worse is cited in an opinion piece on the Psychology Today website. It quotes one academic’s view that “contemporary America is “the most age-segregated society that’s ever been” in terms of work, education, and housing” and another expert who believes the problem has deepened since the pandemic. The writer is Lawrence R. Samuel, founder of AmeriCulture, a Miami- and New York based consultancy “dedicated to translating the emerging cultural landscape into business opportunities”. His concerns raised the worrying question whether the phenomenon will be echoed in other countries. And he lists commonly held perceptions that contribute to ageist attitudes. Among these is “dislike, not to say hatred” of baby boomers, who currently fall in the 61 – 79 age group, by many members of younger generations.
