Over 50s fearing life is all downhill from now on could be greasing the slope beneath their own feet. Research from the University of Surrey suggests those with a positive view of ageing are more likely to maintain good health by engaging in vigorous exercise. Those with a negative view are more likely to “catastrophise” – about an aching knee or breathlessness, for example – and accept it as justification for staying on the couch. Professor Victoria Tischler, co author of the study, said: “Our research suggests that a positive outlooks on ageing could act as a psychological buffer, helpings individuals stay active despite health challenges”.
