Talking animals are more likely to get roles in films that women over 60, according to an anti ageism campaign. And Among the 100 highest grossing movies in 2023, 2024 and 2025, six featured someone called Chris in the lead role against ony five featuring any woman lead actor in that age group. Backed by Dame Emma Thompson, who has consistently raised her voice against such disparities, the Age Without Limits campaign is urging the film industry to step up the representation of older woman on the screen. Dame Emma, whose roles inluded that of a recently widowed, retired teacher whose hires a young male sex worker in the 2022 film “Good luck to you, Leo Grande” said: “Women are half the population and we get older. So where are the stories about us? The older we get, the more interesting we are. I want to see more films centre ageing women, we are compelling, relatable, and overdue for centre stage. Older women don’t need permission to exist on screen. They already exist in the world, cinema just needs to catch up.”
