Fears that they won’t get enough support from colleagues and worries about ageism are two factors undermining older workers confidence that they will cope with later life jobs, new research suggests. More than three quarters (78%) of are confident they could do their current job, or perform a role close to it, when they hit 60. But that falls to 49% when it comes to working at 70. Other concerns for the doubtful include motivation and – unsurprisingly – physical and mental health. The research comes from Phoenix Insights, the longevity think tank division of pensions and later life savings experts the Phoenix Group. It says that although the figures show around half (51%) are confident they will be able to work into their 70s, “widespread under saving means many more may need to work beyond this to support living standards in retirement”.
