Inspired by a LinkedIn post on storytelling by Silver Marketing member Nancy Shenker, our Social Media Manager, Carole, decided to put her favourite AI sidekick to the test.
While Nancy’s article, “Tell Me a Story,” featured a childhood photo of typewriters and storybooks, Carole’s archives held something a bit more… “Swinging Sixties.”
The “Cool Carole” Chronicles
The “Then” photo is a glamorous shot from when Carole was just 16 and contemplating whether to stay on in the Sixth Form. As she explains:
“I was ‘spotted’ by a photographer while out shopping in Chelsea Girl*. He invited me for a photoshoot, and acting sensibly I insisted on bringing my boyfriend along. The result was a lovely set of free images, and the photographer got his reward when his work hit the front page of the local newspaper under the headline ‘Cool Carole.’ (Try living that one down at an Essex comprehensive school!”)
The brush with fame was brief. After a rather “golden” (and promptly declined) proposition for a nude shoot, Carole visited several London modelling agencies armed with her photos. Her ‘bubble’ was well and truly burst when she was told her nose was too broad and, at 5’5”, she was too short!
Thankfully, one kind agency owner offered some sage advice: The modelling world is pretty brutal. Use your brain and your love of words to forge a different, more rewarding career.
The AI Experiment
Decades later, Carole decided to feed her “Then and Now” photos into an AI tool, asking it to simply: “Tell me a story about this picture.” She was completely unprepared for the moving response that followed.
The AI’s Perspective: A “Full Circle” Moment
“This image captures a beautiful ‘full circle’ moment, highlighting the grace of aging and the enduring nature of personality. It tells a story of transformation—not just in appearance, but in spirit.
In the ‘Then’ photo, we see a young woman in the late 60s or early 70s. She has that classic, polished style—the perfectly flipped ends of her dark hair and a look in her eyes that suggests she’s just starting to figure out the world. There’s a touch of quiet confidence, a ‘black-and-white movie star’ quality.
Fast forward to the ‘Now’ photo, and the transformation is striking. The dark hair has transitioned into a bright, sunny blonde; the monochrome palette replaced by vibrant florals. But what’s most wonderful is the smile. While the younger version was posed and guarded, the modern version looks completely at ease. The fine lines around her eyes—those ‘laugh lines’—are a roadmap of a life well-lived, suggesting decades of humour, resilience, and stories.
The Common Thread: Despite the years between the two images, the ‘spark’ remains identical. You can see it in the shape of her eyes and the arch of her eyebrows. She has traded the mystery of youth for the warmth of experience, proving that we don’t just get older; we bloom into different versions of ourselves.”
Who knew AI is a poet?
Stunned by the AI’s sensitivity, Carole accepted its further suggestion: to generate a poem inspired by the contrast between the two eras. This was the result:
The Bloom of Time
The girl in the frame holds a secret,
With hair like the wing of a bird,
In a world that was captured in shadows,
Where the future was yet to be heard.
A curve of the lip and a question,
A gaze that is steady and clear,
She is standing at life’s early threshold,
With the magic of youth held so near.
But the years are a weaver of colour,
And the silver has turned into gold,
For the story has moved from the shadows,
To a brightness that’s brave and it’s bold.
The flip of the hair has been softened,
The dark has given way to the light,
And the patterns of flowers and sunshine,
Have replaced all the black and the white.
The lines by her eyes are the chapters,
Of laughter, of lessons, of grace,
A map of a life that’s been travelled,
Etched deep in a beautiful face.
For the girl is still there in the sparkle,
But the woman has found her own way,
And the beauty of then was a promise,
That blossomed in full for today.
The Verdict: AI as an Age-Positive Ally
“While it won’t win a Pulitzer – and I’m not too keen on the ‘lines etched deep’ comment!” Carole laughs, “it brought a tear to my eye. There was a slightly eerie feeling that this ‘machine’ was able to look deep into my soul.”
Beyond the novelty, there is a powerful lesson here for marketers and creators. AI doesn’t have to be cold or clinical. In this instance, it bypassed the typical tropes of aging and focused on essence, vibrancy, and growth. It serves as a visual and narrative reminder that the “spark” of a person doesn’t fade with age – it simply evolves. As the AI so eloquently put it: “We don’t just get older; we bloom into different versions of ourselves”.
* “Chelsea Girl” was a popular British fashion boutique chain that started in the 1960s (flares, loons and mini-skirts) and eventually merged with Concept Man to become River Island.
